This notice explains how Wildlost licenses the WildLost Rec map layer, and how that layer relates to OpenStreetMap and the Open Database License (ODbL). Read it with the Terms of Service. It is not legal advice.
1. What WildLost Rec is
WildLost Rec is a hosted map overlay (and optional ground layer) in the Service. Schema 2.0 targets an outdoor recreation basemap: woods and other landcover, water, roads, hiking trails, parks and protected areas, buildings, boundaries, place names, peaks, and outdoor points of interest. We publish it as vector tiles and render it with Wildlost’s styling, zoom rules, and icons. As ground, overview zooms may temporarily use OpenFreeMap until a WildLost low-zoom archive ships.
The geographic facts in the layer are derived from OpenStreetMap. OpenStreetMap contributors remain the authors of that data.
2. OpenStreetMap and the ODbL
The OpenStreetMap database is licensed under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0. ODbL is a license for databases. It is not automatically the license of every map you draw from those databases.
ODbL distinguishes two results:
- The Database (and any Derivative Database). If you publicly use those, share-alike under the ODbL still applies.
- A Produced Work. ODbL defines this as a work (such as an image, audiovisual material, text, or sounds) resulting from using the whole or a Substantial part of the Contents.
ODbL section 4.5(b) says that using the Database to create a Produced Work does not create a Derivative Database for share-alike of that Produced Work. The Produced Work itself may be released under a license of the producer’s choosing.
Public use of a Produced Work still requires a notice, under ODbL section 4.3, that Content was obtained from OpenStreetMap and remains available under the ODbL.
The OpenStreetMap Foundation’s Produced Work guideline (endorsed by the OSMF board on 6 June 2014) adds a practical test: if the published result is intended for extraction of the original data, it is a database and not a Produced Work. Otherwise it is a Produced Work. Raster images and printed maps are usually Produced Works. Database dumps, such as a Planet dump, usually are not.
3. How Wildlost licenses the layer
Wildlost treats WildLost Rec as published and displayed in the Service as a Produced Work: a cartographic presentation of selected OpenStreetMap Contents, not a stand-in for an OpenStreetMap database dump.
Because it is a Produced Work, Wildlost licenses that presentation under the Terms of Service, not under the ODbL. You may use the layer as part of the Service. Those Terms do not give you an ODbL license to scrape, extract, or redistribute our hosted tiles as if they were OpenStreetMap data.
If you want OpenStreetMap data under the ODbL, get it from OpenStreetMap, not by mining this layer.
4. What stays under ODbL
Calling the published map a Produced Work does not pull OpenStreetMap data out of the ODbL.
- OpenStreetMap Contents remain available under the ODbL from OpenStreetMap.
- When we show WildLost Rec, we include attribution reasonably calculated to tell viewers that Content came from OpenStreetMap under the ODbL. In the product that notice is typically “© OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL).”
- If you extract a Substantial part of those Contents from our tiles or from the Service and put that extract in a new database, that extract is a Derivative Database. ODbL share-alike would apply to it. Our Terms do not allow that extraction from our hosted tiles.
- ODbL section 4.6, and the OSMF guideline, also require that if you publicly use a Produced Work from a Derivative Database, you offer recipients a machine-readable copy of that Derivative Database, or a description of the alterations from the original Database. We do that by publishing the selection and tile-build method in our public repository (the osmium tag filters and tilemaker processing scripts) and by pointing recipients to OpenStreetMap as the source Database. OpenStreetMap data under the ODbL is at openstreetmap.org/copyright.
5. Required attribution
Contains information from OpenStreetMap, which is made available under the Open Database License (ODbL).

6. Other layers
This notice covers WildLost Rec only. Other OpenStreetMap-derived layers in the Service, such as OSM trails or live Overpass points, remain subject to the ODbL and their own attribution. Third-party layers keep their own licenses.
